🛑 Step 1: Check Requirements
Before enabling FileVault, make sure:
• You’re using a Mac running macOS
• You have administrator access
• You’re logged into your user account
⚙️ Step 2: Open System Settings
1. Click the Apple menu () in the top-left corner
2. Select System Settings (or System Preferences on older macOS versions)
🔒 Step 3: Go to Privacy & Security
1. Scroll down and click Privacy & Security
2. Find and select FileVault
🔑 Step 4: Turn On FileVault
1. Click Turn On FileVault
2. Enter your administrator password when prompted
3. Click Unlock
🧠 Step 5: Choose Recovery Option
You’ll be asked how to unlock your disk if you forget your password:
• Option 1: Use your iCloud account
• Option 2: Create a recovery key (recommended for advanced users)
👉 Important:
• If you choose a recovery key, write it down and store it safely
• Losing both your password and recovery key = permanent data loss
▶️ Step 6: Start Encryption
1. Click Continue
2. Your Mac will begin encrypting the disk
💡 You can keep using your Mac while encryption runs in the background.
⏳ Step 7: Let Encryption Complete
• Encryption time depends on your disk size and data
• You can check progress in the FileVault settings
✅ Step 8: Verify FileVault Status
Once complete:
• FileVault will show as “On”
• Your disk is now fully encrypted
💡 Extra Tips
• Keep your Mac plugged in during encryption
• Restart your Mac occasionally if encryption seems slow
• Always remember your login password
🚨 Troubleshooting
• FileVault option grayed out?
→ Make sure you’re using an admin account
• Encryption paused?
→ Plug in your Mac and ensure it’s not in sleep mode
