How to Enable FileVault for Full Disk Encryption

🔐 Step-by-Step: Enable FileVault

Step 1: Open System Settings

         • Click the Apple menu () in the top-left corner

         • Select System Settings (or System Preferences on older versions)

Step 2: Go to Privacy & Security

         • Scroll down and click Privacy & Security

Step 3: Find FileVault

         • Scroll until you see FileVault

         • Click on it to open the settings

Step 4: Turn On FileVault

         • Click Turn On FileVault

         • You may be asked to enter your Mac password

Step 5: Choose a Recovery Option

You’ll get two options:

         • iCloud account (recommended for most users)

         • Recovery key (you must save this safely)

👉 Important: If you lose both your password and recovery key, your data cannot be recovered.

Step 6: Restart Your Mac

         • Click Restart when prompted

         • Encryption will begin after reboot

Step 7: Let Encryption Complete

         • Encryption runs in the background

         • You can continue using your Mac, but performance may be slightly affected

         • Check progress in the FileVault section

✅ Tips

         • Keep your Mac plugged in during encryption

         • Make sure you remember your login password

         • Store your recovery key securely (password manager recommended)
