🔐 Step-by-Step: Enable FileVault
Step 1: Open System Settings
• Click the Apple menu () in the top-left corner
• Select System Settings (or System Preferences on older versions)
Step 2: Go to Privacy & Security
• Scroll down and click Privacy & Security
Step 3: Find FileVault
• Scroll until you see FileVault
• Click on it to open the settings
Step 4: Turn On FileVault
• Click Turn On FileVault
• You may be asked to enter your Mac password
Step 5: Choose a Recovery Option
You’ll get two options:
• iCloud account (recommended for most users)
• Recovery key (you must save this safely)
👉 Important: If you lose both your password and recovery key, your data cannot be recovered.
Step 6: Restart Your Mac
• Click Restart when prompted
• Encryption will begin after reboot
Step 7: Let Encryption Complete
• Encryption runs in the background
• You can continue using your Mac, but performance may be slightly affected
• Check progress in the FileVault section
